My wife suffers from migraines every month like clockwork. After 15 years I've come to understand that these recurring nuisances have kept her and other members of her family in pain. Many people with migraines have a family history of migraine. If both your parents have migraines, there's a good chance you will too. Even if only one of your parents has migraines, you're still at increased risk of developing migraines.

Recurring headaches and migraines are painful reminders of how fragile our nervous systems are. Even the strongest body builder can be brought to their knees by a migraine or even a severe tension headache.

Headaches and migraines are still an unsolved mystery to researchers. Many researchers conclude that migraines are caused by functional changes in a major pathway in your nervous system called the trigeminal nerve system, and by imbalances in serotonin levels.

Although headache pain sometimes can be severe, in most cases it's not the result of an underlying disease. The vast majority of headaches are called primary headaches. Besides tension headaches, these include migraines and cluster headaches.

Migraines are different from tension headaches which are caused by specific triggers. Unlike some forms of migraine, tension headache usually isn't associated with visual disturbances (blind spots or flashing lights), nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, weakness or numbness on one side of the body, or slurred speech.

Migraine headaches plague millions of Americans daily. In addition to the obvious, there are other common symptoms that accompany the classic migraine headache. During a migraine episode, the most common region of the brain to lose blood flow is known as the Calcarine Cortex. This is the area at the back of your brain that, when stimulated by your eyes, allows you to see. When these nerves are depleted of oxygen, they begin to fire spontaneously.

For example, if the reduction of blood flow is on the side of the brain, know as the temporal lobe, ringing in the ears may result. Most of these symptoms precede the onset of the headache. The sympathetic nerves that control the diameter of the blood vessels rely on specific chemicals to do their job.

These chemicals are called neurotransmitters. Not long after the visual disturbance, the amount of neurotransmitter available to aid in the constriction of the blood vessels is depleted.

This will allow the sympathetic nerves to fire at a higher rate than normal leading to vasoconstriction and potentially, a migraine headache. Because the function of the cerebral cortex is under the direct influence of the spine, it is imperative to address spinal abnormalities as the ultimate source of the migraine.

The nature of headaches may still be a mystery to researchers but we are aware of their triggers. Common migraine triggers may include:

Hormonal changes
Medications
Intense physical exertion
Foods
Stress
Sensory stimuli
Changes in wake-sleep pattern
Changes in the environment

Do you feel pain symptoms in your arm muscles? If your arms feel inflammation pain and a burning sensation, you could be developing a repetitive strain injury. You want fast relief for your symptoms of pain and inflammation. You want to figure out the possible causes of pain in your arm. And you'll want to prevent serious damage or injury to the muscles and connective tissue.

What might be some possible causes of pain in your arm? Overuse of the arm muscles can result in inflammation of the connective tissue. Overworked arms may feel tense and stiff, with burning and sharp pain.

Maybe you use your arm muscles a lot for work or for hobbies. Playing a musical instrument, gardening, building, and crafts can lead to inflammation. If your work is physical in nature, plus you have hobbies that overuse certain muscles, you might be straining your arm's muscles or soft tissue.

If you use your arm muscles a lot, your biceps muscles might be getting overworked. Here are three exercises that will relieve tension in the biceps and help count-balance their workload:

1) Biceps Stretching. There are a few simple ways to stretch the biceps. Learn a few stretches that are just for biceps. Then, practice the different variations until you feel the one(s) that give you the deepest stretch.

When you find the stretch that you need, it might feel very intense. It might produce a burning sensation while you stretch, or numbness or tingling in your hand. These feelings should subside within one minute of completing the stretch.

2) Triceps Strengthening. If your burning pain is due to overuse of the biceps, then getting stronger triceps muscles will help counter-balance the workload.

Exercises for stronger triceps are especially helpful if your pain is leading to elbow tendonitis (tennis elbow).

3) Upper and Middle Back Strengthening. Poor posture and biceps overuse affect your back muscles.

The muscles in between your shoulder blades may be weakened from biceps overuse. When your biceps are overworked, they can pull your shoulders forward.

By strengthening these mid- and upper back muscles, you draw the shoulders back. This relieves pressure on the arm muscles, nerves and soft tissue.

Start practicing these three types of exercises to reduce the burning pain in your arm muscles and tendons, and to prevent overuse injuries.

Imagine the scenario. You have embarked on a fitness regime after years of being sedentary. This is something you've been promising yourself for a long time, but have never got round to, due to working, raising kids and being Chief Cook and Bottlewasher, Laundry Maid and General Dogsbody.

Your weight has increased slowly but inexorably, your bust and waistline have simultaneously headed south, and somehow your favorite clothes seem to have shrunk and are too tight. You, who used to run for your school and played hockey at regional level.

You are determined to stop the rot and regain at least some measure of your former fitness (and figure!). So you join a local running club and turn up religiously in kit and new running shoes. After the first run you are exhausted, but really proud of yourself - you have embarked on the New You.

All goes well for a while; you increase to 3 runs a week and your weight starts to go down. But then your shins start to ache during your run. Not too bad at first; it's uncomfortable, but you keep going - can't let those young ones beat you! But then the pain gets worse and comes on earlier in the run. You have to stop and rub your shins to try and alleviate it. It doesn't help, and you end the run at a hobble, close to tears.

So what's gone wrong? You never had pains like this in the old days. Is there something wrong with your leg bone? Shin cancer?

Relax. It's not the end of the world and you're not crippled for life. You've got a shin splint.

Shin splints are just a name for a muscle inflammation over the shin. The muscle involved is called Tibialis Anterior and runs down the front of your lower leg from knee to ankle. If this long, thin muscle is overused, it gets strained and swells up - hence the pain and the impulse to rub your shin. Bad idea, as this will spread the inflammation.

The most important thing is to stop running at once and get some ice on the area as soon as possible. Use a proper icepack, or wrap something frozen in a towel - ice must not come into contact with bare skin. Rest the leg for at least 3 days, put a compression bandage on it for part of the day and sit with your leg up if possible. Let the family run round after you for a change.

After 3 days, try some low-impact exercise such as swimming or cycling, and take it easy on the running - start with a slow jog once a week and see how your leg feels, then build up from there. Shin splints are a sign of too much of the same activity, so vary your workouts. You'll get just as fit, and should make a full recovery.
